It all started with a tropical wedding, a book and a burp a decade before we shared the Children’s Social Skills Trainer Certification Program with you.
The bride’s quirky sister stood and read a few passages from an 1860’s publication called, The Ladies’ Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness. A Complete Hand Book for the Use of the Lady in Polite Society.
“Now that you are the lady of the house, you must learn how to properly manage your household,” the maid-of-honor lectured, tongue in cheek, to her sister the bride and the laughing wedding guests.
On the plane ride home, my husband Andrew and I rehashed the event and chuckled at the clever reading. “That old book was kind of cool,” I said. “I mean not the goofy, outdated stuff like how to hold a parasol or how to use a finger-glass…but the good stuff, the overall message of how to treat people with dignity and respect.” Just then we heard a loud belch burst from the seat in front of us. “You should write a modern etiquette manual!” Andrew exclaimed.
Years later we found ourselves blessed with two tiny boys (Willow wasn’t here yet) and shocked out of our minds at the lack of social skills we were seeing everywhere. I wanted my kids to grow up in a world that was respectful, kind and compassionate. By then, my company Moms on Edge, LLC had gained some traction and won some prestigious business awards and I had the gumption to finally tackle that social skills book.
I knocked around a bunch of ideas searching for a creative way to get my message across. I figured writing for trainers and teachers would have the biggest impact because they could reach lots of kids at a time. So I wrote the flagship children’s social skills trainer program and sold it on the same site with my line of children’s behavioral products.
IT WAS A HIT! People loved the unique presentation of today’s social skills and manners without it being some hard-to-relate-to throwback to the Victorian age. It became so popular that I tackled life skills trainer programs and communication trainer program. I also included social skills business and marketing content because owning a business is an exciting adventure and I wanted to make sure that my members had the tools to start a social skills business if they had that dream.
So, that’s how our Social Skills Co. was born.
I’ll continue to write and update better and better social skills and life skills training programs to help trainers and teachers learn to teach social skills, life skills, communication skills and modern etiquette. Our thousands of members worldwide deserve a huge thank you for your ingenious insights, thoughtful questions and brilliant suggestions. Your input helps me fine tune the content and make it applicable to today’s youth.
We are honored to be accredited by IACET (International Association of Continuing Education and Training) so teachers can fulfill their CEU requirements using our programs. Becoming an IACET Approved Provider was not a walk in the park, but the hard work was well worth it because it ensures we uphold the highest standard of training.
Oh, and the couple that got hitched that day among the swaying palm trees and sparkling blue Caribbean water? They are is still happily married with two very well socialized daughters.
